Day 88 – 15th August – Katherine

We were expecting today to be a “nothing” day… just driving, driving, driving… but it turned out to be an awesome day… Yes, it did start with the driving, driving, driving part… we are now in the Northern Territory!

Our destination of choice was to make it all the way to Litchfield National Park… but after over 500km we had had enough and decided to stop in Katherine for the night… this is where the fun started.  We managed to get a camp site in a caravan park that backs onto the Katherine Hot Springs (up until this point we didn’t even know they existed).  We did a super quick set up then bolted down to the springs…  What an oasis it was… OK, so it wasn’t ‘hot’ but the water was warm enough for sooky la las like me to soak in…

When we’d booked into the caravan park we had heard we had picked a good night to stay… because the rodeo was in town!  What other opportunity would we have to show the kids a real rodeo in a country town?  So, after dinner we donned our cowboy hats and cowboy boots… well, we would have if we had any… and we hit the rodeo.  There was barrel racing, bull riding, bucking broncos, lassoing, pretty girls on horses doing tricks and most of all, there were cowboy hats galore… And you know what… Aiden completely soaked it up… it really resonated with him…. A ten year old boy is in seventh heaven watching people get bucked off bulls and feisty horses… It was a great holiday experience…
