Day 66 – 24th July – Mt Barnett Station

We had a long drive in front of us today… despite that I still managed to sneak off at 6am for some bird watching.  Unfortunately, no Gouldian Finches to be found but I did see a couple of Northern Rosellas and some Pictorella Mannikins, both for the first time.

We had 100km to get from Mornington back out onto the Gibb River Road.  We then had 60km to reach Mt Barnett Roadhouse, however, the trip was broken by quick side detours into Adcock Gorge and Galvin’s Gorge.

Neither of these two spots could be considered typical gorges.  They are more like short walking tracks to reach waterholes nestled at the bottom of some cliffs.

Adcock Gorge

On the track into the pool we passed this smaller pool that was absolutely chock full of water lilies.  We spotted a couple more Water Monitors sunning themselves on rocks in the middle of the pool.

Galvin’s Gorge… if you look closely at the waterfall you can see the trickle of water at the bottom right.  If you look higher up the rock you can see the discoloured black rock… that’s how much water actually flows over these falls during the wet season.

I like this photo with the big boab at the top of the cliff

Boys will be boys… any opportunity to make a splash

Like father, like son, just not as elegant…

We reached Mt Barnett Station in time for a late lunch… our first hot chips for several weeks… The best thing about the Roadhouse… fresh milk!  It was an expensive visit with lunch, fuel at $2.09/litre, groceries and camping fees for Manning Gorge.
