Day 77 – 4th August – Home Valley Station

Our relatively short drive today, only 110kms, turned out to be rather exciting… after more than three weeks on the Gibb River Road, we finally got our first flat tyre.  Luckily, Dave noticed pretty quickly that something was wrong and so didn’t decimate the tyre (we had just passed a couple who had done exactly that).  Dave was just getting out the jack when a car pulled over.   I reckon there are two kinds of people travelling up here on the Gibb.  When a car is stopped on the side of the road almost everyone will slow down, wind down their window and ask if you’re OK.  The other sort are the people we came across today.  They didn’t even ask if we needed help… he simply pulled up behind us, got out of his car, said G’day, then set to helping Dave change the wheel.  Without any prompting he had the spare wheel off the back of the car ready to go when Dave needed it, then loaded up the flat… meanwhile, the ladies and myself had the important task of swapping travel stories… it was all over in less than 10 minutes… It is truly a wonderful thing to meet people who genuinely want to help…

We didn’t have far to reach Home Valley Station, and luckily, they have a mechanic on site who can do tyre repairs.  You wouldn’t believe it… when the guy checked out our tyre he found a screw… so, after three weeks of Dave being paranoid about hitting sharp rocks, the thing that got us was a bloody screw!  Dave just couldn’t believe it…

We checked in to camp, opting for a riverside spot.  The camp sites near the homestead were on grass… but we had heard about the view down by the river.  Now that we are here, I am rather pleased with our choice… check out this view from the camper…

We are on the banks of the Pentecost River overlooking the Cockburn Ranges… stunning!  And to top it off we have spotted our first saltwater crocodiles.

We spent the afternoon at the pool before heading back to camp to watch a magnificent sunset… the colours in the  Cockburn Range changed continually as the sun went down… the view was like a painting… Unfortunately, I stuffed up my camera somewhere along the line and so my photos haven’t turned out…

This is the main building with reception, bar and restaurant

This awesome sculpture is the main gate leading into the station
