Day 86 – 13th August – Lake Argyle

Lake Argyle is a beautiful, beautiful place…

We set up camp on a tiny patch of land in a pretty caravan park.  Trees everywhere and large grassed areas all overlooking the lake.  We were given some good advice to pre-book a sunset boat cruise, which we did, so we had a few hours to spare before our trip.  We happily filled those hours at the famous “infinity Pool”.

This has been the first patch of level grass for months where Megan could practice her gymnastics…

At 2.30pm we boarded a cruise boat to explore the lake.  Lake Argyle is a phenomenal piece of engineering… it is a man-made lake that has a surface area around 950 square km and contains 21 times the volume of the Sydney Harbour… and all of this was achieved by building one measly little dam wall…

Aiden has been working on his “Blue Steel” look

Our skipper drove us all over the lake taking us to spots where we could see wallabys, wallaroos and crocodiles (apparently there are 25,000 crocs in Lake Argyle).  We stopped at one spot to feed the archer fish.  These fish usually prey on insects that are just above the surface.  The fish spit a jet of water at the unsuspecting creature then grab it as it falls to the water.  We were given some bread which we held over the water and sure enough, the fish spat at our fingers…

The next bit was the best part of the cruise… a sunset swim.  At about 5.30pm as the sun was going down we parked up somewhere in the middle of the lake.  For those of us who jumped in we were served a glass of champagne or a can of beer.  There’s a holiday treat to remember… sipping champers while floating on a noodle in Lake Argyle while the sky showed all its glorious colours of a beautiful sunset…
