Day 64 – 22nd July – Mornington Wilderness Camp

Yep, today was another massive day… this time we set off for Dimond Gorge with canoe paddles in hand…  The canoes are left at the gorge and you hire the paddles from Reception before you head out there.  The kids were super excited…

We managed to squeeze into a 3 seater canoe, which meant Aiden and Megan got the cushy job just sitting in the middle while Dave and I did the paddling…

Unfortunately we didn’t spot any rock wallabies along the cliffs while we were paddling, but we did manage to see another Water Monitor sunbaking on the rock.

We canoed for about an hour to reach the rocks at the end where we couldn’t go any further.  We picked a spot, beached the canoe and found a shady spot to have some lunch.

Speaking of lunch… today we ran out of food…  the milk is finished, the bread is finished, the wraps are finished, the fruit is all gone and we have one more meal worth of salad… But don’t panic, we still have loads of meat and beer…  Yes, we expected it would happen at some point, but it turns out we are going much slower along the Gibb River Road than we had originally thought.  We hadn’t planned on staying two nights everywhere we go… but you need to just to see everything there is too see…  We had bought some long life milk just in case we needed it.  I pulled out the first carton and it had a big hole in it.  Out came the second carton, and it wasn’t until Megan complained several times that her cereal didn’t taste right that we realised this carton had been compromised too… Thank the gods I had bought some powdered milk for us to make damper with… and fifty packets of 2 minute noodles…  If all goes to plan we should reach Mt Barnett Roadhouse in two days time, so we can restock there.

Back to the topic… paddling down Dimond Gorge.  As I mentioned we stopped for lunch at some rocks along the gorge.  No one else came paddling by for quite some time so it was pretty awesome thinking we were in the middle of the Kimberly, in the middle of a gorge, miles from anywhere, and we had it all to ourselves…

On the return trip we found a sandy beach along the base of the cliffs where we beached the canoe again

Time for a swim and for the kids to have a paddle.

Not surprisingly, when it was just the two of them it took quite some time to realise they need to work TOGETHER to get anywhere… at one point Aiden was paddling backwards and Megan was paddling forwards, there was lots of yelling and very little canoe movement…

Standing on our little beach looking back up the gorge… amazing view…

Once we had our fill of paddling we jumped in the car and headed back to the Cadjeput waterhole.  Luck would have it there was a canoe there too.  Apparently the kids hadn’t had enough yelling at each other so once again they jumped in the canoe together again…

Happy days… another rope swing

The view from the end of the water hole… stunning

Back at camp we showered and headed for the bar for a drink.  We have got to the point where we are criss-crossing paths with other people travelling along the Gibb.  Sure enough we ran in to some people we had been chatting with back at Bell Gorge.
