Day 85 – 12th August – Kununurra

Another day at 35 degrees…

Today’s plan was to explore Kununurra.  We drove past acres and acres of mango trees to reach the first stop at the Zebra Rock Gallery.  No prize for guessing that zebra rock is rock with stripes through it… The gallery had a jetty on the Ord River where you could feed the fish.  I still get the heebie-jeebies just thinking about all these cat fish slithering over each other…

Back in town we stopped for a look at a spot called the “Swim Beach” on the Ord River.  We didn’t have the bathers so there was another missed opportunity for a rope swing…

Next stop was an unexpected surprise for us.  There is a small national park just outside of town called the Mirima National Park or also known as the Hidden Valley.  Remember the Devonian Reef back at Windjana Gorge?  During that same Devonian Period these were sand dunes…  they now form some pretty spectacular sandstone cliffs.

Our last stop for the day was all for Dave… the “Hoochery” is a local rum distillery.  We popped in so Dave could sample a tasting platter…

The afternoon was spent food shopping as we needed to stock up for the next week.  Our plan from here is to spend a couple of nights at Lake Argyle then we are going to make a run for Darwin…
