Day 56 – 14th July – Tunnel Creek

Last night we had an impromptu visit from the tooth fairy… who managed to find us even though we are a million miles from anywhere…

Today’s adventure took us to Tunnel Creek.  Tunnel Creek is a water-carved tunnel through the limestone walls of the fossilized barrier reef.  So, essentially, we were walking THROUGH an ancient reef…

Here we are walking into the entrance

Obviously you can only get through the tunnel during the dry season.  The path alternates between sand and wading through shallow water.  Apparently fresh water crocodiles can be found in the cave but we didn’t see any today.  There were a LOT of tourists trekking up and down the tunnel so I reckon the crocs would give it a wide berth.

After the first pitch black section you pop out at a spot where the roof has caved in.  It gives a nice shot of the cross section of the tunnel looking into the blackness beyond…

The light at the end of the tunnel… this is the view as you reach the end

Time to turn around and head back the way we came.  Looking back into the tunnel.

This is the spot in the middle where the roof had caved in… looking back in the other direction. The reflection of the cave walls on the water made for a pretty cool photo.

We stopped here for a bit while Megan, the gymnast, climbed up and down these tree roots

Spidey came along for the trek too… his  spider-senses were tingling in the bat cave…

Back at camp we managed an afternoon of downtime.  Thankfully the kids have found some other kids to play with and so have left us in peace momentarily… here’s the view from where I sit…
