We
had an easy 160km drive today. We had
100km to get out from Mt Elizabeth and along the Gibb River Road until we hit
the turnoff to the Kalumburu Road. After
all those months of debating whether or not to go all the way up to Kalumburu…
we were finally doing it…
Here’s a shot of the Kalumburu Road. It is certainly corrugated but wasn’t too
bad. However, the occasional washout
caught Dave by surprise a few times…
60km up the Kalumburu Road we reached Drysdale Station. As far as sight-seeing, there’s not much at Drysdale, it’s really just a resting point. However, there is a swimming spot 5km up the road. After setting up camp, we headed out there for a quick look.
I was looking forward to reaching Drysdale Station as all
the literature says you can buy fuel and there is a shop. Unfortunately, the shop was a little
overrated… nothing but a few packets of biscuits and other dry goods. When we set out on this trip we were under
the assumption that fuel and water would be our limiting supplies… we were wrong. It turns out just about everywhere we have
been there has been drinking water and enough of it to fill the water tank on
the camper. Fuel hasn’t been a problem…
the Prado has a massive tank which has served us well. Dave fuels up at every opportunity and so
far, touch wood, fuel has not been an issue.
So, what has caught us out is food and gas. We’ve almost run out of both…
The nice thing about Drysdale is the beer garden and the
restaurant… a little bit of luxury in the bush.
To conserve Dave’s dwindling supply of beer and our diminishing food
stock, we had a couple of sundowners then had a lovely meal…
