We
set off this morning for Mt Hart. We had
20km to get back onto the Gibb River Road, about 60km on the Gibb then a 50km
detour to get to Mt Hart. We had a bit
of excitement on the Gibb… first up as we were approaching the Napier Range
(the fossilized barrier reef) we passed a sign saying “Queen Elizabeth’s
Head”. Can you see it?
Further down the track we spotted some smoke. There was absolutely no sign of anyone so we don’t know if this was a controlled burn or a random bush fire.
This guy was crossing the road trying to escape the fire. Our first sighting of a frill-necked lizard, we didn’t know they could be so big…
We turned off the Gibb for the 50km up to Mt Hart. We suspect because it is such a long
distance, most people who are time constrained will drive straight past. Lucky for us… this place is an oasis made
even more special by the lack of crowds.
After setting up, we consulted the map and went in search of Barker’s Pool, about 4km away from camp. We passed this guy on the way. Can’t decide if he is a dingo or just a wild dog?
The tree-lined banks of Barker’s Pool with crystal clear water… and no crocs. There were birds galore. We managed to spot some double-barred finches and some crimson finches. Magic spot…
Spidey having a relax and a swim
To top off the day of animal spotting we came across a pair of Australian bustards on the way home
Back at camp we tidied up then headed over to the main camp to the bar for a drink. I took these photos outside the main reception (the airstrip is just across the road). Love the bit that says, “Daily flights to Rome, Paris, Cairo… pass overhead at 33,000ft”.
We are on day 3 of our Gibb River Road trek and things just
keep getting better and better… can only imagine what is further up the road…
