The
morning was spent on catch-up jobs… then we set off to explore the Broome town
centre. First up, Chinatown. We have decided there is actually nothing
China –ish about Chinatown at all… Bit disappointing really. It was mostly shops and a few cafés. This bar was about the most Chinese looking
with its lanterns…
Wondering around the shops you immediately notice one thing… every second shop sells pearls… I am a girl who likes her bling, but even I was a bit pearled out by the end. We only came across one place that actually had any history about the pearling industry, with a couple of luggers parked up in the back yard. They also had this dive helmet on display.
Next we headed for the world famous Cable Beach, hoping to get there in time to see our friends ride the camels. Here’s the main beach… not a great photo as the sun chose that exact moment to go behind some clouds.
Further up to the beach to the right is the nudie beach, and
surprisingly, where you ride the camels (potentially lots of jokes here but I
can’t think of any to write…). We managed
to catch up with Sharni and her friends and family as they were preparing to
get on the camels. Unfortunately, the tour
was booked out so we couldn’t join them.
Our plan is to do a Saturday morning ride… photos to come…
From Cable Beach to Town Beach to stake out a spot to watch
the Staircase to the Moon. Luckily we
only had an hour to wait… any more than that and we would have throttled two squirming,
whinging children… All the hype and it turns out it lasted for a mere 10
minutes. 10 minutes for the moon to
start rising till it went behind some clouds.
Was it worth the effort? I would
say yes, but not an emphatic yes.
Waiting, waiting... nothing to do but take selfies...
Staircase to the Moon (photo not taken by me but it did look exactly like this)
